Our Story

We met in 2014 and immediately started making things together. Our first day date was making a planter for Travis’s apartment balcony. In 2018, we decided to try to support our making habit by selling some of our items. We make everything by hand in our one-car garage.

We create one-of-a-kind items by hand from sustainably sourced organic materials.

We’re Amber & Travis Mullen, and we make things from organic materials.  That’s where we get our name, AToM. We believe that you should celebrate nature, surround yourself with it, and carry it with you every day.  We find that making things from organic materials allows us to achieve these goals and to help others to do it too! We also want to encourage others to get out there and make things with their hands; making things is really beneficial for your well-being. Travis suffers from PTSD and Bipolar Disorder and woodworking offers him a peace that he rarely finds anywhere else. The process of creating something allows you to shut the world out, focus on one thing at a time, and to be proud of something that YOU did.

Our wood is sourced from a local shop in Columbia, SC whose suppliers use managed forests and responsible, sustainable practices so that there is minimal impact to the environment. We also plant new trees in the regions our wood comes from through donations of proceeds to the Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees foundation.  We strive to recycle (like the wine cork feet on our cutting boards) and to make sure that we’re using every scrap of wood so that nothing goes to waste.

Amber works with the mental health community here in Columbia and Travis works as a software developer.  Making things together is a way for us to bond and to spend time together in a way that lets us both express ourselves creatively.  For both of us, making things from natural materials and working with wood especially is very therapeutic and is important for our mental health.  We met in 2014 and immediately started making things together. In 2018, we decided to try to have a go at selling what we made and have had our fair share of hurdles to get over, but we're loving every minute of it and hope to continue sharing our creations with people like you for a long time to come!
