Matt & Rebecca’s Wedding
Matt and Rebecca were getting married and wanted some place markers for the people who were holding their Chuppah. They wanted them to be unique to the person whose place they were marking. Initially, they just wanted “pucks” that would serve as a piece of art and as a memento for the people who helped them get married. After talking with them, we decided to go with a more functional piece of art: round lidded boxes. Each one is about 5 inches in diameter and ~2.5” tall. They all feature layered laser cut art that’s made from maple, cherry, and walnut plywood plus some pieces of acrylic here and there.
They wanted gifts for David, Sarah, Kurt, and Sally. Our starting point consisted of only a few words: German Shepherd (David), Beagle (Sarah), Goose (Kurt), and cat, monarch butterfly, and snitch (Sally). As we got to know Matt and Rebecca, we figured they were pretty whimsical people and started asking questions in that direction for their friends. Our suspicions were correct and we had a general direction to go in for our art.
One of the most important things that informed our process was finding out that Sally’s family imported mahogany when she was a child. We wanted to make these boxes truly special by invoking that history.
After much collaboration and revision, we wound up with some truly unique and special gifts for Matt and Rebecca’s wedding party.
