Blanket Box For Matt & Kelly
Our client was looking for a meaningful, though late, wedding gift for their brother and sister-in-law. They’d already ordered the couple a few blankets, so we decided to go with a custom storage box to hold them in. We consulted for a while and decided that for the box top, we’d recreate the canyon where the couple was married.
The box top features a layered, laser cut version of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This one was a challenge since it was recreating a real place and rocks, especially layered rocks, are a really difficult thing to draw/simulate well. We used a combination of premium maple, cherry, and walnut plywood to create a layered scene that communicated both the layered nature of rocks and the varied depths and colors that exist in each layer. We paired this with a few pieces of acrylic to simulate the grass and water of the scene.
The box is made from solid Walnut with an Ambrosia Maple inlay on the front. Walnut is considered to be symbolic of wisdom and Ambrosia maple finds its beauty in its imperfections (the gray streaks formed by the burrowing channels of the Ambrosia Beetle). Our thinking was that the combination of the two invoked a powerful message of being wise enough to find beauty in the imperfections of one’s partner. We think that’s a pretty key part of being married.
